Landslide Near Pune: 41 Dead, Hopes Of Rescuing 150 Missing Fades

Nearly 48 hours after a massive landslide hit Malin, a village located 120 kilometres from Pune in Maharashtra, 41 bodies have been recovered from under the debris.

150 people are still feared trapped. Rescue work is going on at the site but hopes of finding them alive are fading for the grief-struck villager.

The town has turned into a mass funeral ground; cremations are taking place alongside search operations for those missing. Many of those killed in the landslide have no one to mourn for them as entire families have been wiped away.

Dilip, 45, lost his entire family in the tragedy, including his eight children.

"I had gone to the fields. My house was the first house around the corner; everyone was buried alive. My children were getting ready to go to school when the landslide struck. None of them stood a chance against nature's fury. The youngest was just five years old," he says.

"The entire family is finished, only one person survived. He is in shock and keeps trembling," said his relative Parubai Karvande.

It has been an agonising wait for another man, who has kept a vigil near the site for hours. He hopes for some news about his wife and two children, who are buried under the 100-feet slush.

"This guy's entire family may be dead. He was saved because he went to Pune for some work," another villager told NDTV.

Rescue operations, helmed by teams of the National Disaster Response Force, have been slowed down by the relentless rains.
