Jagath Dias Likely To Be Next Army Commander

Major General Jagath Dias is likely to be appointed as the next Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, reports said.

Jagath Dias was the commander of the 57th division during the peak of the war against the LTTE in its last years. He later served as the Sri Lankan Deputy Ambassador to Germany, Switzerland and the Vatican. He is the current Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army.

Major General Dias is commended as one of the few divisional commanders who took part in the final battles against the LTTE. The likelihood of him being appointed the next commander is being discussed among military circles. In this event, he will be elevated to the top position of the Sri Lankan Army after its current commander Lt. General Chryshantha de Silva's retirement.

Major General Dias was enlisted to the Army on 11 August 1980. He was elevated to the rank of Major General on 18 February 2008.
