Misleading Headline Says 75 Percent Of Sri Lankans Die Of Drug Use

The vernacular newspaper ‘Dinamina’ carried a misleading headline today which said “75 percent die of drugs” giving the notion that 75 percent of all deaths are related to drugs.

This news item has been prepared from a statement by an Additional Director of National Dangerous Drugs Control Board Kumudini Jayathilake. The introduction of the article said that ’75 percent of Sri Lankans die of drug use’ giving a misleading idea.

The actual statement could have said that 75 percent of drug users die of drug related conditions. However, the report has added confusion to the matter.
