UPFA And UNP To Use 100000 Kilos Of Polythene

Two major political parties in Sri Lanka, the UNP and the UPFA, will use 100000 kilos of Polythene for the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections, a senior spokesman of the Central Environment Authority said.

This means one party, on average, will use of 50,000 kilos of Polythene!

Three political parties, namely JVP, JHU and Democratic Party have pledged to do away with polythene during their election campaigns. Representatives of the three parties who spoke to ‘Asian Mirror’ said they would continue with the same practice till the end of the election season.

Of the major political parties in Sri Lanka, only the UNP and the UPFA, are presently using polythene for their election campaigns.

Several candidates from the two mainstream parties have carried out successful election campaigns in the past without using polythene. Among them are UNP Leadership Council Chairman Karu Jayasuriya, Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and Milinda Moragoda.
