Police Fail To Prevent BBS Event In Kandy

Despite the ban on organizing meetings and protest marches inciting communal feelings, the Police yesterday allowed the BBS to hold a "religious event" in Kandy, where there is a sizable proportion of Muslims.

The Police has granted permission to the BBS rally on the grounds that it is a "religious event." The event will take place today at 3 pm in front of the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. This came just a two days after the Police Media Spokesman announced that meetings and protests inciting communal violence was completely banned in Sri Lanka.

The BBS said the event would be an "Adhishthana pooja" that would take place with the participation of a large number of Buddhist monks from across the country. Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana had told 'The Island' that strict action would be taken if the any party used this opportunity to create disharmony in the country.

Police sources told Asian Mirror that security has been strengthened in the area to avoid any violent incident.
