Police Religious Affairs Unit’s Fate To Be Decided Tomorrow

A key discussion on the ‘Religious Affairs Unit’ of the Police will be held tomorrow under the patronage of Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order Nanda Mallawarachchi and Secretary to the Ministry of Religious Affairs will also take part in the discussion, highly placed government sources told ‘Asian Mirror’.

Following the discussion, a decision would be taken on the ‘future’ of the Police Religious Affairs unit, a senior government spokesman said.

In the recent past, many parties were of the view that the Police unit should be abolished. The unit presently operates under the Ministry of Religious Affairs which is headed by Prime Minister D.M. Jayarathne. Some speculate that the government will move to abolish the Police Unit and resort to an alternative mechanism to resolve religious-related matters in the country.

The spokesman also added that the Maha Sangha will be made aware of the outcome of the discussion and the government’s decision on the Police Religious Affairs Unit.
