Prime Minister Seeks Norwegian Support To Formulate National Fisheries Policy

Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development following the directions of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe has made a request through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Government of Norway seeking technical assistance to formulate a National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy for Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Trade, Industries and Fisheries of the Government of Norway in consultation with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Fisheries has developed a project, which is to be funded by the Government of Norway. The objectives of the Project are to assist the Government of Sri Lanka to formulate a new fisheries and aquaculture policy to suit the present and emerging needs of the sector, develop manpower for management, and facilitate investments in the sector.

Under the Project, two workshops have also been planned from 04 - 07 January and 10 – 12 January at Mount Lavinia Hotel with the participation of a team of Norwegian consultants. Officials involved in development and management of fisheries and aquaculture at both national and provincial level, scientists and experts, industry partners and fisher representatives will participate in the workshop.
