Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake’s proposal to have the cadre attached to public institutions reviewed, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers today.

In his proposal, the Finance Minister said, appreciation of the public service has diminished over the years.

Moreover, he said, while there is a deficit of officers in rural areas, there is more than the required amount of officers in urban areas.

Accordingly, the Finance Minister proposed a review of the cadre attached to public institutions to be conducted by the Ministry of Finance, with the participation of the Ministry of Public Administration and Management, the National Salaries and Cadre Commission, and the Finance Commission.

The cadre requirement of public service and provincial councils will be decided on the outcomes of the review, the Government Information Department said.
