CJ-43 Receives "Official" Invitation To Be Opposition's Common Candidate

Several political parties of the opposition have officially invited former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake to be the common candidate of the opposition at the next Presidential election.

She has received this invitation when she took part in the public meeting which was organized by the Movement for a Just Society, led by Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera, several vernacular newspapers reported this morning.

The public meeting called for the abolition of Executive Presidency.

It was the first political meeting the former Chief Justice participated in after the ruling party ousted her from office early last year through an impeachment in Parliament.

The meeting was attended by representatives of all political parties of the opposition and former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

However, the United National Party, which is the largest opposition political party in Sri Lanka, has already stated that its national leader Ranil Wickremesinghe would be the Presidential candidate of the UNP at the next election.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Democratic Party led by former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka are still exploring the possibility of fielding a common candidate as an “alternative force.”
