Weerawansa Launches Hunger Strike In Prison Cell: Refuses To Have Breakfast This Morning

Leader of the National Freedom Front Wimal Weerawansa, who is currently under arrest for misuse of vehicles, has begun a hunger strike.

A spokesman of his party said Weerawansa had launched the High Court against the rejection of his bail application  yesterday.

"Weerawansa's arrest is a political witch hunt. That is why he decided to launch a hunger strike this morning . He will not give it up until the justice is ensured," he added.

The spokesman said the MP had refused to have breakfast this morning.

When contacted by Asian Mirror, Prison authorities said they were monitoring the MP's situation.

This is the second hunger strike launched by Weerawansa. He launched a fast unto death campaign in 2010 against former UN General Secretary Ban ki Moon, but gave it up after former President Mahinda Rajapaksa offered him a glass of orange juice.
