SB Urges Doctors To Be Selfless And Support PMCs: 'If PMCs Are Bad, Channeling Too Should Be Stopped'

Minister S. B. Dissanayake said medical students should learn aesthetic subjects to become more selfless.

"When they become more selfless, they will never say no to private medical colleges. They will not stand in the way of others who want to enter the medical field. Some of the students pursuing careers in the medical field had failed to enter state universities as they were two three marks short of the cut-off point," the Minister said, addressing a public event in Thalathuoya.

Dissanayake was the Higher Education Minister at the time the South Asian Institute for Technology and Medicine (SAITM) was established.

"If the doctors are against private universities and private medical colleges, their private channeling services should also be stopped. They are beneficiaries of free education in schools and universities. But their channelling services are not free of charge," the Minister said.

Of 140000 students who pass the Advanced Level examination, only 25000 can enter into the state university system. About 20,000 students go abroad to complete their tertiary education. Even the children of those who oppose private universities fly abroad to complete their degrees. They study under extremely difficult conditions. That's why I facilitated establishment of private universities when I was the Minister of Higher Education."
