Water Levels Rise As Heavy Rains Pour Down: South West Monsoon Conditions Establishing Over The Island

Showery and windy conditions are expected to continue over the south-western part of the country as South-West monsoon conditions establish over the country.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-Western provinces, the Meteorological Department said.

Heavy rainfall of more than 150 mm can be expected at some places, it warned.

Showers or thundershowers will also occur at several places elsewhere in the afternoon - especially in the Eastern and Uva provinces – the Meteorological Department said.

It also warned there may be temporary localised strong winds during thundershowers and advised the general public to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by lightning activity.

Meanwhile, water levels of the Kalu, Kelani, Gin and Walawe rivers gone up and area residents have been asked to closely monitor the situation - if the rivers continue to rise they will be asked to evacuate.

People in Baddegama, Thawalama, Nagoda and Welivitiya have been asked to  evacuate due to rising water levels in Gin river, while landslide warning has been issued for Kegalle, Rathnapura, Galle and Kaluthara Districts
