Motor Traffic Act Amended: Cabinet Nod To Publish Draft Bill In Gazette And Present To Parliament

The proposal by Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to publish the amended Motor Traffic Act in the Gazette and have it presented to Parliament, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

The amended draft Bill includes the following changes:

 

·       Transferring the authority of practically implementing a driver’s demerit point system to magistrates and police officers

 

·       Declaring the minimum qualifications for drivers who transport dangerous chemicals, emergency services, and public transport services

 

·       Regulation of speed limits

 

·       Introduction of electronic payment platform for payment of fines.

 

·       Introduction of new classes of vehicles for registration of special vehicles
