September 07, 2017

Inclement weather conditions continue over Sri Lanka as the Meteorological Department said showery conditions over Sri Lanka are expected to continue over the next 24 hours with very heavy showers of between 100mm-150mm expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings to the Ratnapura, Kegalle and Kalutara districts following rainfall of over 150mm over the past 24 hours. The Kukuleganga spill gates too have been opened and residents in Bulathsinhala, Ingiriya, Madurawala and Agalawatte downstream areas have been requested to evacuate.

Due to the active cloudiness in the Southwestern and the Eastern sea areas, very heavy showers or thundershowers, strong gusty winds of up to 70-80 kmph and very rough seas can be expected in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Galle and Pottuvil to Trincomalee via Batticaloa, the Met Department further warned.

It also said that the sea area off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 60 kmph and warned naval and fishing communities to be vigilant in this regard.
