Warrant Issued On Weerakumara Dissanayake Recalled After He Submits To Court: Charges Relating To Protest Outside UN

September 18, 2017

The warrant issued this morning against National Freedom Front (NFF) parliamentarian Weerakumara Dissanayake was recalled by the Colombo Chief Magistrate after he submitted to Court.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe Bandara this morning issued a warrant on MP Weerakumara Dissanayake after he failed to show up in Court as a respondent to a case filed against him and seven others.

The case, filed by the Cinnamon Gardens Police, alleges that the NFF parliamentarian and seven others including NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa staged a protest on February 6, 2016 without prior permission from Police.

Police also alleged that the demonstration – held in protest of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein’s visit to Sri Lanka – used loudspeakers without a valid license and hindered traffic on Bauddhaloka Mawatha.
