20th Amendment Inconsistent With The Constitution: Will Require Parliamentary Majority And Referendum: Speaker

September 19, 2017

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya informed today that certain clauses in the proposed 20th Amendment were inconsistent with the Constitution and would require 2/3 majority in Parliament and a referendum.

The 20th Amendment to the Constitution proposes, among other things, to hold all provincial council polls on one day.

The various provincial councils have been taking a vote on the 20th Amendment and of the 9 provinces, only the North Western remains to vote on it.

The North Central, Eastern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Western Provincial Councils voted in favour of the 20A, while the Northern, Uva and Southern Provincial Councils have voted against.
