Protesting Students Dispersed With Teargas Water Cannons

Police used teargas and water cannons to disperse more than 200 university students who were protesting in Fort.

As a result, there was heavy traffic in Fort and adjacent areas this evening.

A tense situation occurred near the University of Kelaniya in the morning when thousands of students from all the universities in the country are gathered to march from Kelaniya to Colpetty against what they term as arbitrary suspension of 27 students from the University of Rajarata.

A senior Police officer arrived at the location a short while ago and read out a court order preventing the protest march. When the Police officer read out the notice, students who where gathered around the premises hooted at him.

However, Najith Indika, Convener of IUSF, told LFN that they would continue with the protest march as scheduled.

Although Police barricades were placed in Kelaniya to prevent the protest march from proceeding, more than 200 students marched from Kelaniyas to Colombo Fort demanding authorities to address their demands.
