'President Sirisena May Not Publicize Supreme Court Opinion On His Term At This Juncture'

President Maithripala Sirisena may not publicize the Supreme Court's opinion the duration of his term at this point, sources close the President told Asian Mirror.

"The President can hold it back until November 2019. I don't think he will rush into publicizing the Supreme Court opinion at this point. The announcement may come when the dust is settled," a highly placed spokesman who is also a political strategist to the President said.

The Supreme Court's opinion is due to be presented to the President on January. The written submissions can be presented to the five judge bench until 12 noon today.

On the first day of submissions, the majority of parties intervening in the matter made it clear that President Sirisena's term was only valid for 5 years.

However, Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya took a different position stating the President had a mandate to continue in office for 6 years as he was elected before the 19th Amendment was passed in Parliament.
