Top UK Chefs Host Great Street Feast 2018 To Support Sri Lankan Torture Survivors

Raising awareness of Sri Lankan Tamil torture survivors, 20 UK chefs are once again set to host Great Street Feast this summer (20 June) in aid of the national charity, Freedom from Torture, Craft Guild of Chefs announced today.

Coinciding with World Refugee Day, the event will take place at BAFTA 195 (Piccadilly, London) with journalists Ian Hislop and John McCarthy hosting, they said.

The statement also said, "As well as enjoying a selection of “gourmet around the world” dishes from chefs including: Atul Kochhar (Benares), Luca Depallo (Andina), Vitelio Reyes (Ceviche), César Garcia (Iberica) and patissier-chocolatier, William Curley, guests will also be able to sample “specially selected” fine wines from wine wholesaler, Farr Vintners.

Freedom from Torture’s Tamil Group will also be present cooking up traditional Sri Lankan dishes, and continue their work raising awareness of “continuing torture” in Sri Lanka.

To help raise funds, the Tamil Group cookbook – launching at Great Street Feast 2018 – will be available for sale alongside a live auction and raffle.

Speaking of the work the group does, chef-director and event ambassador, Paul Merret, said: “I spent an afternoon with Freedom from Torture's gardening therapy group. We planted and weeded, they baked bread and we sat on the floor together to share the food they had prepared. I thought: ‘This is what healing is about.’”
