Committee Headed By Sarath Amunugama Appointed To Negotiate Continuation Of Unity Government

A special committee, headed by Dr. Sarath Amunugama representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), has been appointed to negotiate the continuation of the national unity government with the United National Party (UNP).

President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have decided to move forward with the national unity government, despite efforts to derail the government with the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister last week.

Members of the Joint Opposition (JO) brought in a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister, citing involvement in the Central Bank Treasury bond scam of 2015 and 2016 and for failing to curtail the violence that broke out in Kandy last month.

A Cabinet reshuffle is imminent, and will take place after the Sinhala and Tamil new year.
