Judicature Amendment Bill Passed In Parliament: Seeks To Set Up Special Courts To Prosecute Corruption And Financial Crimes

The Judicature Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament yesterday, when 119 members voted for the Bill, passing it into law.

52 members voted against the Bill.

The Amendment seeks to set up a special High Court dedicated to the prosecution of cases of large-scale corruption, bribery and other financial crimes.

Speaking to the media ahead of the debate on the Bill in Parliament, Justice and Prison Reform Minister Thalatha Atukorale said the Act would accelerate the ailing judicial process.

She also said it was not the intention of the Act to take political revenge, but instead uphold justice.
