Johann Peries Becomes Second Sri Lankan To Summit Everest After Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala

Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala’s climbing partner from 2016 Johann Peries has successfully summited Mount Everest, making his the second Sri Lankan to do so after Kuru-Utumpala who received the honor of being the first Sri Lankan to climb Mount Everest.

Johann Peries’ team in Colombo announced: ‘Johann Peries successfully summited Mt. Everest at 5.55 am Nepal time today Tue 22 May 2018. This was his second attempt. Peries now becomes the second Sri Lankan to summit Mt. Everest after Jayanthi Kuru Utumpala in 2016.’

Peries’ first attempt in 2016 – together with Kuru-Utumpala – was unsuccessful when his oxygen tank failed 400 metres before the summit. Having returned to Sri Lanka however, Peries determined to tackle the mountain once again, and has now been proved successful.

His team asked the public to hold in thoughts, prayers and devotions for a safe descent, given that the descent is at times more treacherous than ascent.
