UPFA General Secretary Says Some Members Of 'SLFP 16 Group' Want To Re-join Unity Government

UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera said the 'SLFP 16 group' which joined the opposition recently is sharply divided into three factions.

Speaking to media, Amaraweera said a section of the 16 group now wants to re-join the unity government.

The General Secretary also added that their objective was to weaken the President and strengthen the UNP, the main coalition partner of the unity government.

He indicated that some members of the '16 group' wanted to join the Joint Opposition, led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Commenting on demands for his resignation, Amaraweera said he was ready to resign from the General Secretary post of the UPFA at any moment.

"I have no desire to cling to these positions," Amaraweera said.

"I am willing to resign at any point, if it benefits our party," he added.
