The Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters near the Higher Education Ministry, in the Town Hall area. 

The protest was organised by the Inter University Students Federation. 

A heavy traffic was reported in the area this afternoon due to the protest. 

The Colombo Fort Magistrate earlier in the day issued  an order calling for the Inter University Students Federation to ensure their protest is held in a peaceful manner.
