September 05, 2018

Chief Organizer of the 'JanaBalaya Kolambata' protest march Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa said this morning that the government backed groups were trying to cause hindrances to the people taking part in their rally.

Despite these hindrance, Rajapaksa said, the people are marching towards Colombo to show solidarity with the Joint Opposition.

The Joint Opposition also said that restaurants at Pettah floating market, which were preparing to provide meals and drinking water to protestors, have been sealed by Urban Development Authority (UDA) officials.

However, additional Police forces have been deployed in Colombo due to speculations that the protestors will cause disturbances to the public.

Finance and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera, addressing a press conference in Colombo, yesterday said the government would not tolerate if the protestors disrupted civil activities.

Samaraweera also said the government would fully respect the Joint Opposition's right to engage in a peaceful demonstration in Colombo.
