JVP Decides To Take To Streets Against Tax Burden And Cost Of Living: Protest March And Rally In Colombo On Oct 23

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna said the party had decided to take to street on October 23 against the government's continous moves to introduce new taxes and the soaring cost of living.

JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, addressing a press conference at his party headwquarters said, the protest march and a rally will be held in Colombo with the participation of a large number of party members and supporters.

Dissanayake added that the government had no ethical right to restrict imports.

The JVP Leader was responding to the Prime Minister's claims that imports would be restructed and exports would be encouraged to save the economy from a severe dollar crisis.

The party leader also added that the current foreign exchange crisis was a reflection of the government's failed economic policies.

Although the government blames the previous government for foreign debts, Dissanayake said, the country's debt burden has reached new heights under the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe administration.

He added that the current government too was equally responsible for leading the country into a debt trap.
