Susanthika Jayasinghe Under Severe Social Media Backlash After Scornful Remarks On Youth Olympics Medalist Parami Wathsala

Sri Lanka's Olympic silver medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe has come under a severe social media backlash over her comments on Parami Wathsala who won a Bronze medal at Youth Olympics last weeks.

Upon her return to the island from Bueno's Aires where Youth Olympic Games were held, Wathsala requested Sri Lanka's sports authorities to grant her better financial support and other facilities to continue her sporting career.

Responding to this remark, Jayasinghe, now an Advisor to the Sports Ministry, said the request was unwarranted as Wathsala was still a junior-level athlete.

"We trained and performed under much harder conditions. Not only me, but Damayanthui Darsha and Sriyani Kulawansa too went through many hardships. She should focus on the game and continue to perform. Such public requests bring a bad name to the Sports Ministry and the Minister," Jayasinghe said.

She also said it was up to the Education Ministry to support her as Wathsala is still a student.

Jayasinghe's remarks drew severe criticism on social media as many critiques described them as "highly irresponsible and hypocritic".

Some even demanded Jayasinghe step down her position from the ministry post as her attitude was detrimental to the future of Sri Lanka's sports.

Despite Jayasinghe's scorn, Housing Minister Sajith Premadasa agreed to provide her with an apartment in Colombo as it would give her an opportunity to train under national coaches in Colombo, on a daily basis.

Premadasa also offered to renovate her house in the Chillaw area.
