UNP Requests All Media To Refrain From Using Titles For Any Parliament In The Absence Of 'Legitimate Government'

November 26, 2018

UNP Chairman Kabir Hashim has requested all media stations to refrain from identifying Parliamentarians in official titles, as the government stands dissolved after Parliament adopted two no-confidence motions against Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government.

In a statement this afternoon, the UNP Chairman said no Parliamentarian should be accorded the titles ', Prime Minister'. 'Minister', 'State Minister' or 'Deputy Minister', as there is no 'legitimate government' in the country.

The UNP made this request to all media institutions citing Hansard reports of November 15 and 16.

The statement also added that the correct usage of titles and positions would safeguard media from lawsuits and civil actions over the matter.
