December 10, 2018

A petition filed by Dambara Amila Thera challenging the illegal sacking of Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister and other members of his government has been fixed for support on January 07.

The Supreme Court took up the petition filed by the Buddhist monk this morning.

Meanwhile, a case filed by Oshala Herath, a former Coordinating Secretary to President Maithripala Sirisena, on the same matter has also been fixed for support on the same day.

President Sirisena sacked Wickremesinghe and his government on October 26 and appointed a new government headed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

In another development, a lawyer filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court today, challenging Speaker Karu Jayasuriya's decision to convene Parliament while the Supreme Court had issued an interim order.

The petitioner said the Speaker had no right to convene Parliament while a case on the dissolution of Parliament was pending in the Supreme Court.
