India - Sri Lanka To Join Taskforces To Tackle Drug Smuggling

India and Sri Lanka are expected to finalise a strategy to jointly tackle cross-border smuggling of narcotics.

Indian media reported that the two countries are soon expected to take steps to join taskforces in order to minimize drug smuggling between the two.

Anti-narcotics investigators from both countries will get together for the first time at a two-day conference on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

In a United Nation's report earlier, it said that India has been playing a major role in the inter-nation drug smuggling ring and that drugs originated in India has been circulating in the South Asian region significantly.

Bernama reported that the conference will be headed by a Sri Lankan deputy inspector general officer and a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) official.

"The subjects of discussion will be purely operational and involve matters concerning both sides," a senior official said.

Sea couriers and channels of drug syndicates will also be discussed at the conference.
