The prisoners mainly protested against the Special Task Force (STF) raids within the prison premises. They also protested against the conduct the Superintendent of the newly-built prison in Agunakolapelessa.

The committee working on protecting the rights of all prisoners in the country said the attack had been carried out in an unjust and unfair manner. The incident had been captured by CCTV cameras placed within the prison premises.

They asserted that every officer involved in the incident must be punished, as the attack was a blatant violation of the prisoners' rights.
