Plantations Unions End Strike Action: Planters Agree For All Inclusive Daily Package Of Rs. 850: Tea Board To Invest Rs. 100 Million

The long-drawn trade union struggle of plantation workers came to an end today as planters unions and Regional Plantation Companies (RPC) agreed to increase the daily basic wage of plantation workers to Rs.700 from Rs.500.

They also agreed to an all-inclusive daily package of Rs. 850 per workers including EPF and ETF. Plantation workers demanded a daily wage of Rs. 1000 and both parties came to a compromise agreement today to end the current deadlock.

Plantations Minister Navin Dissanayake said the Tea Board, which comes under the ministry, will invest 100 million Rs to give the arrears to the workers.

The Minister added that the strike action posed a grave threat to the stability of the tea industry, a mainstay in Sri Lanka's export sector.

Dissanayake, Labour Affairs Minister Ravindra Samaraweera and Plantation Deputy Minister Vadiwel Suresh also held talks with all stakeholders today on ending the month-long crisis.
