President Sirisena Presents Proposal To Cabinet Seeking To Hold Provincial Council Election Before June

The Cabinet has passed a proposal presenting by President Maithripala Sirisena on holding the Provincial Council elections, before June this year.

It is learnt that all UNP Ministers in the Cabinet have voted in favour of the proposal, claiming they have nothing against holding elections.

The UNP has repeatedly stated that it was the SLFP, led by President Sirisena, that was responsible for delaying elections.

The proposal came a day after Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Dehapriya threatened to resign from office if the government failed to hold elections before November 10.

However, political sources said Parliament would have to pass a motion allowing the Elections Commission to hold the Provincial Council election under the old electoral system.

President Maithripala Sirisena, on a previous occasion. said the UNP seemed reluctant to hold the Provincial Council election.
