MR Meets Muslim Organizations: Representatives Express Opposition To 20th Amendment to Constitution And Muslim Political Parties

February 16, 2019

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's office said a number of Muslim civil society organizations met Rajapaksa this morning.

However, it did not disclose the full list of Muslim civil organizations that met the former President.

"A number of Muslim civil society organizations met with opposition leader @PresRajapaksa , & have objected to the proposed 20th amendment to the constitution," SLPP Muslims, a Twitter account operated by the SLPP said earlier today.

"They have declared Muslim minority party opinions are not the opinion of the Muslim community as a whole," it also added. The large majority of main Muslim political parties are currently aligned with the United National Front.

The 20th Amendment, presented to Parliament by the JVP, pertains to the total abolition of Executive Presidency — an election promise by President Maithripala Sirisena.
