All Necessary Measures To Renounce US Citizenship Adopted Successfully: Gota Says Upon Arrival At BIA

Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rakapaksa said all necessary measures to renounce his US citizenship have been taken successfully.

Rajapaksa made this remark while speaking to the media upon his arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport this morning.

Rajapaksa indicated that the court cases filed in the US would have no bearing on his ability to run for the presidency in Sri Lanka.

A large number of supporters are gathered at the BIA to welcome the former Defence Secretary who is currently facing two court cases in the US.

Among them are Joint Opposition MPs Dullas Alahapperuma, Sarath Kumara Gunaratne, Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Prasanna Ranaweera.

Sources said the former Defence Secretary arrived on the island at 8.35 AM this morning.

The former Defence Secretary left for the US on a personal visit. In an unanticipated development, legal action has been filed against Rajapaksa in the US Court over his conduct as the Defence Ministry Secretary in Sri Lanka between 2005 and 2015.

Rajapaksa was served notice this on two separate cases; the murder of former Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunga and torturing Roy Samathanam, a Tamil Canadian who was under the custody of the TID during Rajapaksa's tenure as the Defence Secretary.

Rajapaksa was reportedly served notice on Sunday at a parking lot of a grocery store while he was holidaying on California
