Prisons Department Has Received No Information On Convicts Due To Be Executed: Prisons Commissioner General Tells Appeal Court

Prisons Commissioner General today informed the Court of Appeal that the Prisons Department has not received information from President Maithripala Sirisena on convicts due to be executed, nor date and time.

Commissioner General of Prisons gives Appeal Court undertaking that no executions will take place before July 17, even if the President sanctioned.

The Prisons Commissioner General made this statement as the court heard a Fundamental Rights Petition against the death penalty filed by Journalist Malinda Seneviratne. However, addressing a meeting with media heads and newspaper editors, President Sirisena said he had already signed notice to impose death penalty on four convicts.

Sirisena said everything, including the date of execution, was decided.
