Fresh Controversy In UNP: Sajith Premadasa Groups Wants To Invite President Sirisena's SLFP To Join Proposed New Alliance

The UNP group supporting Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa is now pushing to include President Maithripala Sirisena's SLFP in the proposed alliance for the next Presidential election.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, a source close to Minister Mangala Samaraweera, a strong supporter of Premadasa, said the SLFP too would be invited to join the alliance.

"However, that will be done after amending the constitution of the new alliance," he added. The move has sparked concerns among the rank and file of the UNP as Sirisena has been a harsh critic of the UNP in the recent past. Sirisena also triggered a political crisis in Sri Lanka by appointing Mahinda Rajapaksa the Prime Minister without a Parliamentary majority.

The signing of the agreement relating to the formation of the coalition has been postponed indefinitely due to concerns over its constitution.

The supporters of Premadasa have been requested to present their proposals on the coalition constitution as soon as possible.
