Supreme Court Squashes President Hopes Of Executing A Convict Before The End Of His Term

The Supreme Court today squashed President Mauthripala Sirisena's hopes of executing a convict before the end of his term.

The apex today extended the interim order on the implementation of the death penalty until December 08, preventing President Sirisena from executing a convict before the next Presidential election.

Speaking at an SLFP event recently, Sirisena expressed his desire to end the moratorium on the death penalty before the end of his term.

The Supreme Court, therefore, would give the ruling on the matter during the tenure of the new President who will be elected at the next Presidential election.
