Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa And Chinese Envoy Reach Initial Agreement To "Renegotiate" Hambantota Port Deal

December 03, 2019

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chinese special envoy Wu Jianghao have agreed to renegotiate Hambantota port lease agreement 'without jeopardising long-standing #lka-China friendship'.

The initial agreement was reached between the two parties at a meeting in Colombo yesterday.

The understanding followed President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's pledge to renegotiate during an interview with BharatiShakti.

President Rajapaksa said the decision to hand over the Hambantota Port to China on a 99-year lease was a "mistake".
