Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said he would intervene to strengthen unity and harmony in the UNP.

Speaking to the media after meeting the Mahanayake Theras in Kandy, Jayasuriya said the Mahanayake Theras requested him to come foreward to ensure stability in the party.

However, Jayasuriya said, as the Speaker of Parliament he had some limitations in terms of engaging in party politics.

"Nevertheless, I will do my part as per the wish of the Mahanayake Theras," he added.

The UNP Parliamentary group is expected to meet tomorrow to discuss the appointment of the new Opposition Leader and other party reforms.
