February 12, 2020

The Attorney General has again instructed Acting IGP Chandana Wickremaratne to arrest suspended High Court judge Gihan Pilapitiya over the call recording controversy involving MP Ranjan Ramanayake.

Writing a letter to the Acting IGP, the Attorney General has expressed disappointment that the Acting IGP has not made any progress on arresting Pilapitiya.

The Attorney General's previous instructions to arrest Pilapitiya sparked outrage among lawyers who said the Attorney General had overstepped his boundaries when ordering to arrest the HC judge.

The arrest was then put on hold by the Acting IGP. President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa also issued a special directive to the IGP instructing him not to arrest individuals unless it is absolutely necessary,

However, the Attorney General later asked the IGP as to why his instructions were disregarded by the Police.
