Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said the government decided to withdraw the Gazette notification declaring Sainthamaruthu as an Urban Council.

Gunawardena said when the matter was taken up before the Cabinet, the ministers decided not to proceed with the Gazette notification.

"We will study these issues in the entire country and come up with comprehensive solutions in one go, without addressing issues relating to specific areas from time to time, " Gunawardena said.
