In his letter, Jayasundata has said it is the duty of the Elections Commission to decide on the new date and the President did not wish to interfere with the duties and the functions of the Elections Commission.

The Secretary has further pointed out that the Commission cannot state, at this point, that the election cannot be held before May 28.

He has also expressed surprise that the Elections Commission's letter to the President was published in the media even before it was received by the Presidential Secretariat.
