Activities of all rice mills have been declared as an essential service, the government announced a short while ago.

The move is aimed at preventing a rice shortage in the country in the coming weeks. The announcement will bring the activities of rice mills owners under increased scrutiny.

The decision has been made according to the powers of the Quarantine Act, the President's Media Division said.

The declaration will be effective until further notice.
