Parliamentary Election Cannot Be Held On June 20 Under Current Circumstances: Elections Commission Informs Supreme Court

The National Elections Commission informed the Supreme Court today that the Parliamentary election cannot be held on June 20, under the current circumstances.

Appearing on behalf of the Commission, Saliya Peiris PC said the commission was not in a position to proceed with the election until they received a green light from the health authorities.

The Commission has decided not to issue preferential numbers for candidates until the conclusion of the ongoing hearing.

The Commission brought this to the attention of the Supreme Court during the hearing of the petitions challenging the election date.
