The victim whose body was found from Independence Square this morning has been identified as Rajeewa Jayaweera, a former senior official at the Sri Lanka Airlines.

He is also known as a contributor to a prominent opinion website on a wide range of social topics.

The circumstances which led to his death are still unclear.

Initial investigations said there were gunshot wounds in his body.
