Trade unions announce black week at Colombo port

Sri Lankan port workers are set to launch a protest campaign from tomorrow demanding the commencement of the Easter Container Terminal development.

The trade unions have declared a “black week” at the port of Colombo and pledged to start their protect campaign from the Chaithya located in the vicinity of the port.

They said 23 trade unions have pledged support to the collective trade union action.

The previous government has signed an initial understanding to develop the East Container Terminal with the support of India and Japan under a confession art 40-year loan.

Port unions are pushing for the cancellation of the agreement and have maintained that the SLPA should develop the terminal with its own money.
