Election Results Give A Red Light To The Government

September 22, 2014

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said that the Uva polls suggest that the people of Sri Lanka have given a ‘red light’ to the Government.

Addressing a press briefing at the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna headquarters, the JVP Leader said ‘during the Uva Provincial Council Election the opposition parties have clearly shown an increase in votes while the support for the UPFA has reduced substantially when compared to the result last time.'

Dissanayake also highlighted that the election violence that was unleashed upon opposition parties has not produced desired results for the government.

JVP's Chief Ministerial Candidate for the Uva Provincial council Samantha Vidyarathne also managed to get a seat from the Badulla district as he obtained more than 14000 votes. Also, there was a significant increase in the total vote base of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna in the province.

In the Uva Provincial Council election which was concluded on Saturday (20), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna was able to secure two seats adding an extra strength to the opposition while the United National Party (UNP) managed to get 13, which adds up to a total of 15 seats for the opposition.

The UPFA obtained 349906 votes from the two districts while the UVP received 274773 votes. The total number of votes achieved by the JVP stands at 35585.
