Fonseka Says There Is A Conspiracy To Wipe Away His Party From Politics

September 27, 2014

Sri Lanka's Democratic Party Leader Sarath Fonseka has said that certain parties have plotted to ‘wipe away’ his party from politics as they pose a major threat to the present government.

“We were aware of a plot to infiltrate election counting centres and sabotage the Sri Lanka Democratic Party’s result. This plot was put into motion with the government’s consent”, he said.

Fonseka lashed out at the Elections Commissioner saying that he did not take steps to prevent this situation and said  he initially ‘trusted’ the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to hold a peaceful and legitimate election. Fonseka added that the Elections Commissioner’s response was elusive when the Democratic Party inquired about this situation.

He said that the officials who were in-charge of counting the votes did not cooperate with representatives  of the DP who were there for observation and at a certain point one of the officials had allegedly verbally assaulted the Democratic Party representatives.

“On numerous occasions our agents have intervened in the counting process to point out the faults in counting, this was not in just one location. we have recorded similar incidents in numerous places”, he said.

The Sri Lanka Democratic Party Leader maintained that he was surprised at the end result of the Uva Provincial Council Election.

“The response from the people Uva we had prior to the election bears witness to the fact that the final result was a complete sham”, Fonseka said. The Democratic Party. led by Fonseka, failed to secure any seat at the recently concluded Uva Provincial Council election.

Fonseka pointed out that the there is no point in keeping a ‘henchman’ of the government as the Elections Commissioner and that an independent party should take charge.

However, Sarath Fonseka asserted that a foreign party should also intervene and apply pressure on the Sri Lankan government to hold free and fair elections in the country.
