‘Deploy Foreign Elections Monitors In Future Elections’ - UNP

The UNP has sent a set of proposals on the forthcoming Presidential Election to the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya.

One main proposal has been to let foreign elections observers to come to Sri Lanka and observe the elections. The UNP has also requested the Elections Commissioner to allow 45 days of campaigning for the election.

There is a widespread belief that the government will go for an early election, without giving enough time for campaigns. However, the government and to some extent even UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe have effectively launched their campaigns for a possible presidential election.

The UNP decided to put forward these proposals since it was apprehensive that the election will not be free and fair, the Chairman of the Leadership Council Karu Jayasuriya has said. The UNP was concerned by the fact that about 70 government officials had attended the opening of the UPFA election campaign office on September 25.

Meanwhile, there have been a few attacks on UNP politicians in the last few days. There were some disturbances in the Uva Province following the election. There was an attack on a vehicle convoy at Giriulla, an attack on a hotel belonging to MP Palitha Range Bandara and an attack on a house at Nawalapitiya. Some commentators have alleged that these are facets of a campaign of systematic intimidation.
